Laser eye surgery reshapes the surface of the eye known as the cornea. This remarkable structure is only as thin as a thumbnail but is the most important optical element of the eye. Minute changes in its thickness, such as those occurring with laser surgery, have a profound effect on the ability to focus.
The procedure begins with either the LASIK or PRK approach which differ only in how the outermost layer of the cornea is removed prior to treatment with an ultraviolet laser beam. Then, a computer is used to control the treatment beam as it reshapes the cornea in the desired fashion. Through the process of ablation, corneal tissue disintegrates within the defined shape, depth and width of the laser beam, producing results that have been reliable and stable time and time again. In the past, broad beam lasers were used to achieve this effect but we are now able to offer the latest generation of lasers: a Wavefront guided, fine spot beam to deliver the finest precision technology has to offer. With Custom Cornea, people with large pupils or certain forms of astigmatism who may not have been good candidates for laser surgery in the past have options.
